LAMS Presentations
NB: The following are a representative snapshot of LAMS presentations over the life of the initiative. Many things have changed with time (including organisational affiliations, interface quality and sometimes the content of the presentation), but the key concepts of LAMS can be traced all the way back to the earliest presentations.
From Re-usable E-learning Content to Re-usable Learning Designs: Lessons from LAMS
James Dalziel, 6 April 2005

LAMS in the future
James Dalziel, 11 January 2005
Summary: Presentation for the JISC LAMS evaluation mid-project workshop at Aston University, Birmingham, UK. This presentation is a complement to the SST presentation (November, 04), in that it provides details of future development based on requests from teachers and students. Includes screenshots and mockups of a number of important future LAMS features.
Learning Design: Why does it matter?
James Dalziel, 25 November 2004
Summary: This presentation for the annual workshop of the Standards Australia e-learning and library standards communities is of interest for two reasons. First, it represents the first public statement of disillusionment with the agenda of the e-learning standards community after almost 3 years of close involvement. Second, the presentation considers ways in which librarians could become involved in developing and managing LAMS sequences - including screenshots of a suggested process for development by librarians.
Open Code and Open Content for Education: The LAMS Experience
James Dalziel, 18 November 2004
Summary: Presentation for the "Unlocking IP" conference at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. This is the first presentation to discuss not only the topic of open source software and LAMS, but also the application of open content (ie, Creative Commons) to the "output" of the LAMS software, that is, LAMS sequences. Also includes a brief discussion of open source business models and sustainability issues. This presentation was given "virtually" two weeks later for the Open Source Summit in Arizona.
LAMS: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow
James Dalziel, 9 November 2004
Summary: Presentation for the Specialist Schools Trust LAMS implementation workshop in London. This presentation provides a historical overview of the development of LAMS, including the reasons why it was development. It then reviews current and future activities in the areas of technology, pedagogy, open source and business models.
Activity Tools for Learning Design: Lessons from developing LAMS
James Dalziel, 22 July 2004
Summary: This presentation was given for the Learning Design steam of the IMS Altilab standards conference in San Mateo, California. The presentation incorporates screenshots and problems from the original presentation of LAMS to the Valkenburg group in February 2003 with the diagrams from the CMI presentation in April 2004, based on differences between the LAMS approach and OKI/Sakai. It asks why there has been no movement on revising the IMS Learning Design specification in the 18 months since the problems raised by LAMS were first discussed. This remains a key presentation about the relationship of LAMS to the IMS Learning Design specification. Further details on this issue are contained in the Educause Australasia article in the White Papers section.
LAMS Roadmap launch
James Dalziel, 15 July 2004
Summary: This is the presentation at which the open source roadmap for LAMS was officially announced. This launch was hosted by Professor Diana Laurillard, Head, E-learning Strategy Unit at the UK Department for Education and Skills.
LAMS - extra CMI [Cambridge MIT Institute] slides
James Dalziel, 22 April 2004
Summary: This presentation was meant to be a fairly typical overview of LAMS, and slides based on this had even been distributed before the talk. However, due to the presentations and conversations on the day, the normal presentation was abandoned for these slides, which discuss the differences between the OKI and Sakai approaches to e-learning architectures, and the LAMS approach. Of particular interest are the final two slides, which compare the "hoped for" nature of Learning Design development (via crude "box size" indicating the scale of the development effort) with the actual experiences learned from build LAMS. Even at April 2005, few people have recognised the challenge illustrated by these diagrams.

CETIS Pedagogy Forum: LAMS - The Learning Activity Management System
James Dalziel, 3 August 2003
Summary: This presentation for the UK CETIS Pedagogy forum is similar to the Educational Content SIG presentation, except that it also includes a first attempt at modelling the IMS Learning Design "Versailles" use case - widely considered to be the defining example of Learning Design from the IMS Learning Design specification. This presentation was also memorable due to the fact that when a transition line was first drawn between activities to illustrate the flow of tasks, there was an audible intake of breath across the audience. The same presentation was given to The Learning Federation in Melbourne, Australia the following week.
LAMS - Learning Activity Management System: A Learning Design "inspired" system
James Dalziel, 13 June 2003
Summary: Presentation in London for the UK CETIS Educational Content Special Interest Group of the shorter "What is Greatness? example, including, for the first time, annotated screenshots (although in the presentation, LAMS was demonstrated live - the screenshots were for a record afterwards). Variants of this presentation were given in a range of public and private contexts in Australia and the UK from this time onwards.

This presentation was also shown the following week at a JISC-hosted meeting in London about e-learning architectures that included Professor Diana Laurillard.
